Is It Possible to Change Sectors After Booking a Gorilla Permit in Uganda?

Planning a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda involves choosing the right trekking sector, booking a permit and arranging accommodation. However, travel plans can change. You may book a permit for Buhoma and later prefer Rushaga because of your accommodation or travel route. So, can you change gorilla trekking sector after booking?

The answer is yes, under certain conditions. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) allows eligible permit rescheduling, including changes of tracking location. However, availability, the number of previous changes and the applicable fees determine whether your request can proceed.

Can You Change Gorilla Trekking Sector After Booking?

Yes. You can request a change from one Bwindi trekking sector to another after booking your gorilla permit. For example, you may request to move from Buhoma to Rushaga, Ruhija or Nkuringo. However, UWA must approve the request before you travel to the new location.

According to UWA's published July 2024 guidelines, a reschedule can involve changing the tracking date or location. The authority also limits each permit to two reschedules. Therefore, you should contact your tour operator as soon as you realise that your original sector no longer suits your plans.

Importantly, a change of sector is not guaranteed simply because another location is more convenient. UWA must first confirm an available tracking slot for your preferred sector and date. Your original permit remains valid for its registered location until the authority approves the requested change.

Which Gorilla Trekking Sectors Can You Change To?

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four main gorilla trekking sectors. These are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Each sector has a designated visitor information centre where trekkers report for registration and briefing.

You can request a change between these sectors, subject to UWA approval and availability.

Change from Buhoma to Rushaga

Buhoma is in the northern part of Bwindi, while Rushaga lies in the southern section. Some travellers prefer Rushaga because it offers access to several habituated gorilla families and fits well with routes from Lake Bunyonyi and Kigali. However, you must obtain approval before changing your permit.

Change from Rushaga to Nkuringo

Rushaga and Nkuringo are both in southern Bwindi. Nevertheless, they have different trekking starting points and accommodation options. If your lodge or safari route changes, you can ask UWA to approve a transfer between these locations.

Change from Ruhija to Buhoma

Ruhija lies in eastern Bwindi, while Buhoma is in the north. Travellers sometimes request this change to match their accommodation or wider Uganda safari itinerary. However, UWA must confirm availability before accepting the request.

Can You Change from Bwindi to Mgahinga?

This is different from changing between Bwindi sectors. UWA's published guidelines state that rescheduling applies only within the same conservation area and for the same activity. Therefore, a Bwindi permit cannot simply be moved to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park under the ordinary sector-change procedure. Contact UWA to establish the available options before making alternative arrangements.

How Much Does It Cost to Change Gorilla Trekking Sector?

The cost depends on the number of previous reschedules and when you submit your request. UWA's July 2024 guidelines provide the following conditions for eligible permit changes:

  • First reschedule: No charge, provided UWA approves the request and space is available.
  • Second reschedule: A surcharge of 25% of the total permit cost applies.
  • Requests made less than 14 days before trekking: UWA may still process them, subject to availability, but a 25% surcharge applies.

If the new tracking period has a higher permit price, you must also pay the applicable difference. Furthermore, a permit that has already been rescheduled cannot qualify for a refund under these guidelines.

Promotional and complimentary permits have separate restrictions. UWA does not allow their rescheduling.

Always confirm the applicable conditions with UWA before paying any additional charges.

How to Request a Gorilla Permit Sector Change

If you have already booked your gorilla permit and want to move to another sector, follow the proper procedure. This helps avoid confusion and protects your trekking arrangements.

1. Contact your tour operator

Start by contacting the company that arranged your gorilla permit. Share your booking details and explain why you want to change sectors. Lavida Africa Safaris can help travellers understand the process and coordinate the request with the relevant authorities.

2. Identify your preferred sector

Clearly state whether you want to move to Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga or Nkuringo. Also, confirm whether you want to retain your original trekking date.

3. Check availability

Your operator should check whether UWA has available permits in the preferred sector on your selected date. Remember, availability in one sector does not guarantee availability in another.

4. Submit the request to UWA

The request must follow UWA's official rescheduling procedure. Do not assume that a conversation with your tour operator automatically changes your permit.

5. Confirm the approved changes

Wait for official confirmation before changing your accommodation, transport or other safari arrangements. Check that the updated booking reflects the correct date and trekking location.

Why Do Travellers Change Gorilla Trekking Sectors?

There are several reasons why visitors may want to change their original trekking location. One common reason is accommodation. A traveller might book a lodge in Rushaga but later discover that their permit is for Buhoma. Changing the permit may be preferable if suitable space exists.

Another reason is a change in the safari itinerary. Some travellers combine gorilla trekking with Lake Bunyonyi, Queen Elizabeth National Park or Rwanda. Consequently, a different sector may fit their road journey better.

Trekking preferences can also influence the decision. Some visitors prefer a particular area because of its terrain, accessibility or accommodation choices. However, changing sectors does not guarantee an easier trek or a particular gorilla family.

What Happens If Your Preferred Sector Has No Available Permits?

Sometimes, your preferred sector may already be fully booked. This is particularly important during busy travel periods when many visitors plan gorilla trekking in advance.

If UWA cannot approve your request, consider keeping your original permit and adjusting your accommodation and transport instead. You can also ask whether another eligible date has available space.

For example, if you hold a Buhoma permit but have booked accommodation in Rushaga, you may find it easier to change your lodge rather than your permit. This can save time and reduce unnecessary travel expenses.

How to Avoid Booking the Wrong Gorilla Trekking Sector

The best way to avoid sector-change complications is to plan your safari carefully before purchasing your permit. First, decide which destinations you want to visit and identify the most suitable gorilla trekking location.

Next, check the accommodation options around your chosen sector. Confirm the actual distance between your lodge and the designated briefing point. Do not rely only on the description that a property is located near Bwindi.

Finally, confirm the trekking sector, date and traveller details before completing your booking. Lavida Africa Safaris recommends securing the correct permit first, then arranging accommodation and transport around the confirmed location.
