Safari Overview

This 3-day Congo tour takes you to Kahuzi-Biega National Park, renowned for its lowland mountain gorillas. The park has four habituated gorilla families, so permits should be booked well in advance. The safari starts and ends in Kigali, Rwanda, crossing into Bukavu-Congo via Cyangugu border.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Congo

Your guide will pick you up from your Kigali hotel or airport after breakfast and drive through Rwanda’s rolling hills to the Cyangugu border. Stopovers may include Butare Museum and Nyanza Palace. Complete border formalities and cross into Bukavu, Congo, arriving early evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Lowland Gorilla Tracking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park

After breakfast, drive to Kahuzi-Biega park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking dos and don’ts. You will be assigned a gorilla family and begin trekking at 8 AM. Trekking may take 1–2 hours depending on the gorilla movements. Spend a maximum of 1 hour with the gorillas. Return to Bukavu for refreshments and optional afternoon/evening visits to local community homes, Kibati Waterfalls, Bukavu town, or Mbayo Tea Estate. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 3: Transfer Back to Kigali

After breakfast, check out and transfer back to Kigali through Cyangugu border. Stopovers en route may include Nyanza Palace and Butare Museum if missed on Day 1.
