Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Goma & Nyiragongo Base

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, you will be welcomed by your safari guide and begin your journey toward the Rwanda–DR Congo border.

Drive through scenic landscapes to Gisenyi and cross into Democratic Republic of the Congo at Goma.

Proceed to Nyiragongo park headquarters inside Virunga National Park for registration and briefing.

After lunch, begin the hike to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo.

The ascent takes approximately 5–7 hours through rainforest, rocky slopes, and volcanic terrain. Along the way, enjoy views of lush vegetation, wildlife, and dramatic landscapes.

Arrive at the summit in the evening and settle into basic volcanic shelters near the crater rim.

At night, witness the spectacular glowing lava lake—one of the most powerful natural sights on Earth.

Day 2: Sunrise at Nyiragongo – Descent & Return to Kigali

Wake up early to witness sunrise over the crater and the glowing lava lake inside Mount Nyiragongo.

After breakfast, begin your descent back to the park headquarters. The hike down takes approximately 4–5 hours.

Meet your driver and transfer back to Goma for lunch.

Cross back into Rwanda and continue to Kigali for airport drop-off or overnight stay depending on your schedule.

Your unforgettable Nyiragongo volcano adventure comes to an end.

The best time to visit Democratic Republic of the Congo for the Nyiragongo hike is during the dry seasons (June–September and December–February), when trails are safer and visibility of the lava lake is at its best.
